If you live where the pavement ends, you already know the internet situation. The cable company's coverage map turns gray a mile before your driveway. The DSL line was installed when flip phones were new. The neighbor swears by satellite, and the other neighbor swears at it.

This is an honest comparison of rural internet options. Honest means we include the ones where we are not the right answer. We sell one of these options, and we would rather you pick the right one than pick us and cancel in a month.

Why rural internet is hard

It comes down to density. Wired providers spend money per mile of line and earn money per house on that line. In a subdivision, a mile of cable passes a hundred homes. On a farm road, it passes four. The math does not work for them, so they stop at the county road and put "coming soon" on the map for a decade.

Wireless options exist because they skip the per mile cost. Satellite covers everything from orbit. Cellular towers cover a radius. Fixed wireless covers a line of sight. Each one trades the reliability of a buried wire for the reach of a signal, and each one does that trade differently.

Option 1: DSL

DSL runs internet over old telephone lines. Where it exists, it exists because the phone company was already there.

What it needs to work: A phone line to your house and a DSL enabled switch close enough. Performance drops with distance from that switch, and rural houses are far from everything.

The upside: It is wired, so weather does not matter much, and it is often the cheapest option on paper.

The downside: In many rural areas it is aging out. Phone companies are not investing in copper, and the connection you get at the end of a long line can be barely usable. Contracts, install fees, and modem rentals are common.

Good fit for: Someone within a mile or two of town whose line is in good shape and who mostly needs email and light browsing.

Option 2: Cable and fiber

The gold standard, if the line reaches you. It usually does not.

What it needs to work: Cable or fiber physically run to the house. If the map is gray at your address, no amount of calling changes that.

The upside: Reliable, unaffected by weather, and the connection quality most people picture when they say "internet."

The downside: The install appointment, the technician window, the contract or the promotional rate that expires, the equipment fee, and the fact that it is not available. Some providers will extend a line for a construction fee that runs into thousands.

Good fit for: Anyone lucky enough to have it at the curb. If that is you, this post is mostly academic.

Option 3: Fixed wireless from a local WISP

Wireless internet service providers, or WISPs, put a radio on a tower or a grain elevator and beam signal to a dish on your roof.

What it needs to work: Line of sight between your dish and their tower. Trees, hills, and buildings break it.

The upside: Local companies with local support. Often no contract. Frequently the best rural option where it exists.

The downside: Coverage is a patchwork. A WISP might serve one side of a ridge and not the other. Installation involves a technician on your roof, and leaves in summer can degrade a connection that worked fine in February.

Good fit for: Homes with a clear view toward a WISP tower, especially where cellular signal is weak.

Option 4: Satellite

Satellite covers essentially everywhere with a view of the sky. Newer low orbit systems have changed what satellite can do, and for the deepest rural addresses it is often the only real choice.

What it needs to work: A dish with an unobstructed view of the sky, mounted somewhere permanent or set up each time. Hardware purchased up front.

The upside: Works in places nothing else does. Truly remote cabins, mountain hollows, and desert homesteads.

The downside: The dish is a piece of hardware you buy, mount, and maintain. Heavy weather can interrupt service. Trees are the enemy. Some plans have their own fine print on usage, and the up front hardware cost is real. It is also not portable in any casual sense. Moving the dish is a project.

Good fit for: Locations with weak or no cellular signal and a clear sky. If your phone has no bars anywhere on the property, satellite is likely your answer, and we will say so.

Option 5: Cellular internet from a portable modem

This is what we sell, so read this section knowing that.

A cellular modem is a box with a SIM card inside. It connects to the nationwide cellular network wherever there is signal and creates a wifi network in your house. No dish, no line, no technician.

What it needs to work: Usable cellular signal at your location. That is the whole requirement.

The upside: Nothing to install. It ships to your door, you turn it on, you are online. Month to month, no contract, no credit check, no address eligibility check. If you move, it moves. If you have a second place, it goes there on weekends. Free shipping both directions.

The downside: It is only as good as the signal where you put it. A house in a valley with no bars is not a candidate, and placement matters more than it does for a wired line. We cover placement in depth in our modem placement guide.

Good fit for: Rural homes where phones get usable signal indoors or near a window. That describes a lot of rural America, and it is the gap between "the cable company will not come" and "you need satellite."

The honest test for your place

Forget coverage maps, including ours. Maps are estimates drawn by people who have never stood in your kitchen.

The real test is your phone. Walk the house. Check signal in the room where the modem would live, ideally near a window on the side of the house facing the nearest town or highway. If you regularly have usable signal there, a cellular modem is a strong candidate. If you have to stand on the porch and hold your phone at a specific angle to send a text, it is not.

Different phones on different networks will show different results, so ask visitors what they see too. Placement matters more in the country

In a city, the tower is close and signal comes from several directions. In the country, the tower may be miles away in one direction. That makes placement the difference between a great connection and a frustrating one.

  • Put the modem near a window facing the tower, which usually means facing the nearest town, highway, or ridge with antennas on it.
  • Higher is better. Second floor over first, first floor over basement.
  • Metal roofs, foil backed insulation, and stone walls all block signal. Get the modem near glass.
  • Keep it away from the well pump controller, the freezer, and anything with a big motor.

Ten minutes of moving the modem around on the first day is the best investment you will make.

Combining options

Rural households often run two connections, and there is no shame in it.

  • Cellular primary, satellite backup for people whose signal is good most of the time but who cannot afford to be offline during a storm.
  • Satellite primary, cellular for travel for deep rural homes with an RV or a second place in town.
  • WISP primary, cellular portable for people who want the local wired feel at home and the box that goes on the road.

A portable modem is a natural second connection because it costs nothing to set up and nothing to walk away from. Month to month, deposit back on return.

What the big providers will not tell you

Every big provider has a rural story on its website. Most of it is a map with optimistic shading.

  • "Available in your area" often means available at the address in town, not at the address on the ranch road.
  • Carrier home internet plans are commonly gated by address. Your neighbor may be approved and you may not be, for reasons nobody will explain.
  • Promotional rates end. Equipment fees continue. The contract outlives your patience.

We do not gate by address, we do not check credit, and the price does not move. Whether the signal reaches you is the only question, and it is one you can answer with your phone before you spend a dollar.

Cost of getting connected, not just cost per month

Rural comparisons usually stop at the monthly price. The bigger number is often what it takes to get connected in the first place.

  • Cable and fiber extension: a construction charge if the line does not reach you, sometimes large enough to buy a used car.
  • WISP: an install visit and a roof mounted dish, with a fee that varies by company.
  • Satellite: hardware purchased up front, plus mounting.
  • DSL: an install fee and, typically, a modem rental added to every bill.
  • Cellular modem: nothing. Free shipping, a $100 refundable deposit, and the first month. If it does not work, the deposit comes back.

When the up front cost is zero and refundable, trying the option is free. That is not true of anything that requires a truck or a dish, and it is a fair thing to weigh before committing to a technician visit.

Portability as a rural feature

City customers think of portability as a travel feature. Rural customers use it differently.

The same modem runs the house during the week and the shop on Saturday. It rides to the hunting lease in November. It sits in the truck during a long day of fence work so the tablet in the cab can pull up the parts order. It goes to town with the kid for a semester and comes back. None of that requires a second plan or a phone call.

For households where the "house" is really a house, a barn, a shop, and two vehicles, a box that moves is more useful than a line that does not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a cellular modem for a farm office or a shop?
Yes. Same box, same plan. The Business plan adds a static IP if you run equipment that needs to be reached remotely.

What about weather?
Cellular is generally less weather sensitive than satellite, since there is no dish pointing at the sky. Severe storms can affect any wireless service, including the tower itself.

Will it work in my metal barn?
